He does not have arms long enough to constantly pat himself on the back, but he does use his legislative knowledge to get the most for his district while pushing major state agendas. He is not flashy, but he knows how to negotiate to get the most out of the Republic majority. I don't agree with a lot of liberal or conservative politicians, but there are many republican leaders whom Cook could have picked for their skills, leadership, and grace -- even if he doesn't like their politics. I would not mistake pragmatism for liberalism by any means, which is what I consider Smith ant Pitts to be, pragmatists. There is no question that Deuell and Chisum are very conservative. As for Carona, I mulled that over a bit myself, so I went to the horse's mouth: I asked Dan Patrick what he thought. Without hesitation, Senator Patrick said he believes Carona to be a true conservative.
