I don't agree with a lot of liberal or conservative politicians, but there are many republican leaders whom Cook could have picked for their skills, leadership, and grace -- even if he doesn't like their politics. I would not mistake pragmatism for liberalism by any means, which is what I consider Smith ant Pitts to be, pragmatists. There is no question that Deuell and Chisum are very conservative. As for Carona, I mulled that over a bit myself, so I went to the horse's mouth: I asked Dan Patrick what he thought. Without hesitation, Senator Patrick said he believes Carona to be a true conservative.
